INDIE SPIRIT - Where Angels DonĀ“ t Sleep; LAFW SS19

    08 October 2018

INDIE SPIRIT - Where Angels Don´ t Sleep

    By Katja Schmolka

LA Fashion Week celebrated its 7th season in a new experimental format. It seemed more like a scene of Mozart´s Magic Flute when suddenly models in silver and yellowish feather robes, adorned with glittering Swarovski Crystals, waltzed on the runway in the Petersen Automotive Museum at the LAFW Opening Gala in Los Angeles.

“West Coast Fashion”, as Angelenos like to call their Fashion Hub, has been flying high lately. It experiences a new renaissance in the international fashion world as more and more eyes are not only on Milan, Paris, London and NYC but also on the creative scene in L.A. LAFW has proudly opened its doors to over 20 award-winning designers & artists from around the world who present their latest SS19 collections.

“Fashion Knows No Boundaries And Language”

The twenty selected artists & designers derive from different cultural backgrounds and countries like Thailand, Germany, Netherlands, England, Lebanon and America, among others. The shows are being showcased until Wednesday, October 10th, to a crowd of fashion enthusiasts. Their styles are as different as their nationalities. From Lala Love`s mini dresses printed in vibrant colors showcasing prints that often mirror the Zeitgeist of current affairs delivered in a slightly sarcastic way - to Bohemian Society´s skull Biker jackets and dresses. Uniqueness is the key word when it comes to different collections. LAFW has been praised for “raising awareness of cultural diversity and creativity in the United States”, recently by the honourable Office of Michelle & Barack Obama.

Los Angeles based designer Elie Madi enchanted VIP guests with his take on his SS19 collection. We call it the “New Nude” - chiffon and organza evening dresses, some in sleek fashion, some in “Cinderella Style” adorned with feathers and hundreds of tiny Swarovski crystals which sparked in the spotlight on the runway.

    THE MAFI AWARD

Every year the most talented designer is honoured with the Moss Adams Fashion Innovator Award - MAFI. This prestigious award is granted once a year to the very best creatives. This season it features the talented fashion designer Elie Madi.
